Waste water treatment is necessary because it is not possible to return to the environment water loaded with pathogens.
Irrespective of its source, it is necessary that the water returned to the environment should have levels of pathogens that fall within certain levels.
If this is not the case, a disinfection step must be taken to restore the levels to the permitted level.
